What happens during a back massage?

During a back massage the posterior upper body, in other words the area from the buttocks to the neck, is being massaged. If the pain is in a certain back region, the therapist may focus exclusively on this region.

Treatment reasons can vary: Some simply want a soothing relaxation massage, while others suffer from severe tension and need a medical treatment.

What techniques are applied?

Depending on the client’s needs, the therapist uses different techniques. Often used techniques for a back massage are on the one hand the classic massage, which consists of

  • Swiping
  • Kneading
  • Rubbing
  • Knocking
  • Vibrations

or trigger point therapy, where specific tension nodes are massaged with pressure. In the case of severe complaints, Deep Tissue Massage is additionally used to loosen glued or hardened tissue layers.

Depending on the therapist’s repertoire of methods, other methods such as fascia therapy, Lomi Lomi massage or shiatsu might be applied as well.

What are the effects of a back massage?

A back massage can have many positive effects. Among them are:

  • It activates your parasympathetic nervous system – rest & digest
Through the physical touch during a massage our parasympathetic nervous system is being activated. The activation of this branch of our autonomous nervous system is responsible for our body’s relaxation and regeneration.
  • Muscle Tensions are released, and pain is eliminated
The therapist targets tensions and treats them. Thus, pain is relieved and often even eliminated.
  • Chronic pain is relieved
If you suffer from chronic tension or back pain, a back massage can relieve your pain. If you combine regular massages with targeted movement exercises, the pain can in most cases be successfully counteracted.
  • It promotes blood circulation and strengthens the immune system
Regular back massages can strengthen the immune system. In addition, the stimulated blood circulation provides the treated regions with more nutrients.
  • It can improve your sleep
Many suffer from sleep problems in today’s world. In Switzerland, it is even a third of the population. Several studies show that massage can improve the quality of your sleep.
  • It can relieve headaches
Back and neck tension can often extend into our head and thus trigger mild to severe headaches. By relieving tension in the back area, headaches can be prevented and counteracted.

When can a back massage help?

It can help with the following complaints, among others:

  • Tension of the lower back, shoulders, or neck
  • Lumbago
  • Psychological stress
  • Headache
  • Aching sciatic nerve

When is a back massage not recommended?

In the case of internal injuries, injuries to the spine or chest, or after surgery, a back massage is not recommended. In addition, this type of massage should in no case be used on open wounds in the back region.
