Uetliberg
The Uetliberg is also called Üetliberg and is the so-called local mountain in Zurich. It is a local recreation area that is very popular with tourists.
From the Uetliberg, you have a wonderful view over the city of Zurich, the Alps and Lake Zurich. The mountain is 871 metres above sea level. The Uetliberg is worth a visit at any time of year. In November you can experience the blanket of high fog above the city of Zurich, and in winter you have wonderful hiking and also sledding trails. In summer, the Planet Trail is particularly interesting for bikers. In Adliswil you have a fascinating view of the solar system.
Infrastructure and recreation area
The development of the mountain for tourists began in the 19th century with the opening of the Uetliberg railway and the construction of hotels and inns up to the Albis chain. Today, the traditional Hotel Uto Kulm and the observation tower, which is open all year round, are located on the top of the mountain.
The extensive possibilities offered by the Uetliberg are particularly spectacular: Hiking trails, bike trails, quiet little places, fireplaces, and historical sights. The Uetliberg is one of the ten most sought-after excursion destinations in Switzerland.
Hiking on the Uetliberg is possible on a wide variety of trails. There are a wide variety of hiking routes here. The Denzlerweg extends from Albisgüetli, where the terminus of tram line 13 is located, in a straight line to the summit. From Albisgüetli, the Lantern Trail leads west to the ridge. From Triemli, the Hohensteinweg reaches directly up over a mountain shoulder. The path is very popular as a toboggan run in winter. The best known is the ridge path from the Uetliberg. It is very scenic and extends over the Felsenegg to the Albispass. From there it continues over the Albishorn directly to Sihlbrugg village.
The Triemli and the Höckler are the official bike trails on the Uetliberg. However, there are a few rules to follow when biking, as there are also hikers on these trails. THE Höckler is particularly challenging. The narrow path is only 30 to 60 cm wide and 500 m long. In addition, it is a steep path. Courage and skill are needed here to master the descent.
Sledging on the Uetliberg is particularly popular in winter. There is a difference in altitude of about 330 metres between the mountain station and the end of the toboggan run. Paragliding on the Uetliberg is another sport that can be practised here. You have the opportunity to fly very well here in moderate breezes. The region around the mountain is a beautiful bisecting flight area in front of the city of Zurich. Together with the flying schools and flying clubs located here, the take-off and landing area in Leimbach is managed in consultation with the owners.
