Bahnhofstrasse

Internationally known as one of the most expensive and exclusive shopping streets in the world, Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich stretches for approximately 1.4 kilometres. Adjacent to it are numerous jewellery shops, luxury hotels and department stores. For the most part, international luxury brands have found their place here. Over a longer period of time, the international luxury labels have forced old traditional shops, such as Türler Watches & Jewellery, to close or move their business to another location. On site is the Paradeplatz, which is crossed by the Bahnhofstrasse. The square is considered the centre of the Swiss banking centre in Zurich. The headquarters of Origin Massage Zurich in Dufourstrasse is also not far from here.

Large parts of the street are not accessible for cars and similar means of transport due to the pedestrian zone. Equally well-known are the record rents there. At up to 15,000 francs per square metre per year, ground-floor retail space is among the highest in Europe. This means that the values are a quarter higher than in Bern, for example, or 50 % more expensive than Kaufingerstrasse in Munich, which is currently considered Germany’s most expensive street. The turnover per square metre achieved by the shops is also record-breaking.

Worldwide, only Hong Kong or New York City achieve similar high values as Bahnhofstrasse. Zurich’s main railway station is north of there and can be reached from Bürkliplatz on Lake Zurich. It forms the border between the City and Lindenhof neighbourhoods. To the left of the Limmat, the Old Town is thus enclosed with a slight curve. In addition, the street is incorporated into the upper and lower Bahnhofstrasse.

The upper Bahnhofstrasse is from the lake to Paradenplatz, while the lower Bahnhofstrasse is the section from the station to Rennweg. The traffic there is very quiet due to the pedestrian zone. Only on the section between Paradenplatz and Bürkliplatz do tram lines 2,8,9 and 11 have priority. In everyday life, the street is mainly used as a shopping mile and as the seat of lawyers’ offices or banks.

Especially during the day, the street is very busy. Bahnhofstrasse is also part of the traditional route of the guilds’ parade at Sechseläuten, which is considered a fire custom and spring festival in Zurich. But the street in the centre of Zurich is also included in other major events such as the Street Parade.
