Myofascial release Uster

Fasciae are connective tissue structures that run through the body like a net and connect all of its important parts. They play an important role in the body’s mobility, posture and function.

Various techniques can be used to relieve tension or restrictions in fascial tissue. This treatment method can primarily minimize pain but also improve mobility.

What are fasciae and what do they do?

As connective tissue structures, fasciae run through our entire body and connect muscles, organs and other structures. They are also responsible for supporting these and ensure that the body’s function, support and mobility are guaranteed. Basically, fascia consists of collagen fibers, connective tissue cells and a large amount of water.

In a healthy state, they have a high capacity for stretching and elasticity as well as a high tensile strength. With increasing age, fasciae often become more sticky, which in turn can result in movement restrictions.

Fascia also has an added value for the immune system. By gliding smoothly through the various layers of tissue, they form a kind of barrier against foreign bodies. They also act as a support for the blood circulation and the lymphatic system.

What is fascial treatment?

Fascia therapy is primarily used to relieve tension, improve mobility and alleviate pain. Long, even and deep strokes through the tissue are used to loosen the tissue layers and stimulate the production of fluids. Fascia therapy can be very painful, and is often described as a «feel-good» treatment. Just before the body tenses up, it is released again.

It is often used for back or neck pain, but also for sports injuries and chronic pain syndromes. It can be used individually or in combination with other therapies to achieve optimum results.

When is fascia treatment used?

Facial therapy is generally used for chronic pain. It is also particularly popular for sports injuries, where it helps to relieve discomfort and support muscles and joints. It can also be helpful for functional disorders or post-operative scar tissue. It is also used for psychosomatic pain and tension caused by incorrect strain. It can also have a rehabilitative effect in cases of pain-related relieving posture.

What is the difference to other massages?

As its name suggests, the focus here is on the fasciae and the removal of their adhesions. This differs from classic massage, for example, where the muscle tissue is treated.

With the help of fascia therapy, pathological changes in the connective tissue can be realigned and the production of fluids stimulated, which results in the release of the fascia. This makes the tissue more supple and the individual layers of tissue can be restored or even improved.

Which methods of fascia treatment are available?

  • Rolfing: Developed by Dr. Ida Rolf in the 1950s, this method involves strong and deep work on the connective tissue using mindful touch. The aim is to mobilize and revitalize the fasciae in order to loosen up adhesions, stabilize joints and improve movement
  • Myofascial release: physiotherapist John F. Barnes developed this method in the 1960s, although he still referred to it as osteopathic therapy. The aim is to bring about local changes through direct stimulation. There is also a special focus on deep tissue or pressure massage.
  • Fascial distortion model: An anatomical model that was introduced in the 1990s by emergency physician and osteopath Stephen Typaldos. six individual fascial disorders to be treated, based on a 3-pillar model: Diagnosing medical history, physical examination and body language. In doing so, he combines osteopathy and orthopaedics.

How does a fascia massage work?

After a detailed initial consultation, which is based on the exact symptoms and clarification of the tension relationships, the posture and other movement patterns around walking are examined.

Treatment takes place either in the supine, prone or lateral position. Treatment in a sitting or standing position is also possible if required. During the therapy period, patients preferably only wear underwear so that the body and its reactions can be easily observed. This is followed by a final consultation.
