MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE IN BASEL

Lymphatic drainage uses gentle techniques and stroking movements in combination with careful massage to help reduce tissue swelling caused by oedema, injuries or surgical procedures.

Edema is caused by fluid accumulation in the tissue, which can cause swelling. Normally, excess fluid is removed without any problems. However, if there is a blockage, for example due to the severing of lymphatic channels during an operation, this can lead to a build-up that causes swelling. This is particularly common in limbs such as the arms or legs.

How is lymphatic drainage used?

Manual lymphatic drainage is particularly effective for swelling in the arms and legs and can significantly promote the healing process. Regular use supports the recovery process, for example after surgery.

This form of therapy is also ideal for venous insufficiency and orthopaedic and traumatological conditions that are associated with swelling. It can also have a supportive effect on complaints such as burns, whiplash, migraines and similar symptoms. Continuous manual lymphatic drainage is particularly useful after operations to speed up healing.

The treatment also helps to improve the elasticity of scar tissue and promote the formation of new lymphatic channels in the affected tissue sections, effectively reducing swelling.

When should lymphatic drainage be avoided?

Manual lymphatic drainage should be avoided in the case of

  • Acute thrombosis
  • Untreated malignant diseases
  • Severe heart failure
  • Acute septic infections
  • Decompensated cardiac insufficiency
  • Tumor diseases
  • Fever
  • Unclear inflammatory processes
  • Erysipelas (erysipelas)
  • Cardiac oedema

Under certain conditions, lymphatic drainage can be used for

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Survived thromboses
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • pregnancy
  • asthma

Important: In these cases, it is essential to seek medical advice beforehand.
