Myofascial release Basel
Fascia forms a sensitive but robust network of tissue that runs through the entire body and connects muscles, organs, and other structures. This network influences posture, freedom of movement, and numerous physical functions. Targeted fascia treatments can reduce pain, release tension in the connective tissue, and improve mobility in the long term.

What are fasciae and what do they do?
Fascia forms a widely ramified network in the body that connects and stabilizes muscles, organs, and other tissue structures. At the same time, it contributes significantly to mobility, power transmission, and functional processes. It is composed primarily of collagen, various connective tissue cells, and a high proportion of water.
When healthy, fasciae are elastic, resilient, and extremely stretchy. However, with age or uneven strain, adhesions can develop, making movements stiffer or causing pain.
In addition, fasciae perform important tasks for the immune system: their slippery layer system acts as a barrier against external influences and supports the body’s own defenses. At the same time, they provide a structural basis for blood and lymph vessels, thereby indirectly contributing to circulation and decongestion.
What is fascial treatment?
Fascia treatment is primarily used to treat muscular tension, pain during movement, or limited mobility. Using calm, deep, and even pulling techniques, the therapist separates the different layers of tissue from one another while simultaneously supporting the formation of tissue fluid, which is important for supple structures.
The treatment can be intense or uncomfortable in places – many describe this feeling as pleasant pain. Before the body tensed up against the technique, the pressure was consciously reduced.
Whether used alone or in combination with other forms of therapy, fascia work can significantly alleviate symptoms and improve the musculoskeletal system in the long term.
When is fascia treatment used?
Fascia work is often used for long-term pain problems. It can also provide valuable support after sports injuries, as it improves the function of muscles and joints. This method is also recommended for restricted movement, discomfort caused by scars after surgery, psychosomatically influenced pain, or tension resulting from poor posture.
If the body adopts a relieving posture due to pain, the treatment can help to break these patterns and restore natural mobility.
What is the difference to other massages?
While many traditional forms of therapy focus primarily on the muscles, fascia treatment targets the connective tissue network and any adhesions that may be present.
Special techniques can be used to reorganize structures in the fascia tissue and stimulate the formation of fluid in the tissue. This makes the tissue more supple and allows the individual layers to slide over each other more easily again.
Which methods of fascia treatment are available?
Rolfing: This method was developed in the 1950s by biochemist Ida Rolf. It focuses on intensive, deep work on the connective tissue, combined with conscious, precise touch. The aim is to release tension, mobilize stuck structures, and improve freedom of movement.
Myofascial release: This concept was coined in the 1960s by physiotherapist John F. Barnes and was then classified as an osteopathic treatment. Targeted pressure and slow stretching impulses are used to stimulate local changes in the fascial tissue and reduce functional disorders.
Fascial Distortion Model (FDM): The model was developed in the 1990s by emergency physician and osteopath Stephen Typaldos. It is based on three diagnostic pillars—medical history, physical examination, and body language—and describes six different types of fascial disorders, each of which is treated specifically. FDM combines elements of osteopathy with orthopedic knowledge.
How does a fascia massage work?
At the beginning, there is a detailed initial consultation to clarify the existing symptoms, possible triggers, and the current tension pattern. In addition, the therapist observes the patient’s posture and typical movement patterns, such as when walking, in order to obtain a comprehensive picture.
The subsequent treatment usually takes place in a supine, prone, or lateral position, occasionally also in a sitting position. Ideally, patients should wear only underwear so that body reactions and movement patterns remain clearly visible during therapy. At the end of the session, the procedure is discussed again and any next steps are explained.
