MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE IN CHUR

Using a gentle massage, special grips and gentle strokes, manual lymphatic drainage supports the decongestion of swollen tissue caused by fluid retention. A common trigger for edema (fluid retention and associated swelling) is trauma or surgery, for example.

Edema is caused by blood in the vascular system carrying nutrients to cells and tissues. Normally, the lymphatic system drains the excess fluid back into the bloodstream. However, if the outflow is disturbed, for example because lymphatic channels were cut during surgery or an injury impedes lymphatic flow, the fluid can accumulate in the tissue and form edema.

Arms and legs are particularly frequently affected. Manual lymphatic drainage activates the lymphatic system and helps the tissue to absorb and eliminate the accumulated fluid.

When should lymphatic drainage be performed?

Manual lymphatic drainage is suitable for various applications, such as swollen arms or legs due to lymphatic fluid or lipolymphedema. The healing process can also be supported by regular applications in the case of sports injuries.
Manual lymphatic drainage can also be useful in cases of venous weakness and orthopedic as well as traumatological diseases that are associated with swelling. In addition, it can also be used for burns, whiplash, migraine and similar conditions. After surgery, regular manual drainage is recommended to stimulate the healing process and reduce swelling.
Manual lymphatic drainage can be particularly helpful with scars to improve the mobility of scar tissue and to support the regeneration of lymphatic vessels in severed tissue. The improved drainage of lymphatic fluid can reduce swelling more quickly.

When should drainage treatment not be done?

Manual lymphatic drainage is not suitable for all patients. Manual lymphatic drainage should not be used in cases of acute thrombosis, untreated malignancies, pronounced cardiac insufficiency, acute septic inflammation, decompensated heart failure, (malignant) tumors, fever, inflammatory processes of unclear etiology, erysipelas, and cardiac edema.
In some cases, however, manual lymphatic drainage is possible in a modified form or under certain precautions. This is the case, for example, in chronic inflammations, expired thromboses, hypotension, thyroid dysfunction, pregnancy and asthma. In any case, however, manual lymphatic drainage should always be used in consultation with the attending physician in order to minimize any risks and achieve the best possible treatment success.
