Robin Simmons

Teacher and Teacher-trainer of the F.M. Alexander Technique of psychophysical health (AT)

The Technique can help you reduce pain and stress, yet also simultaneously help you improve your posture, your breathing, and your performance in any activity.

Posture? – Pain? – Performance? – Pregnancy? – Breathing? – Coordinating? – Stress?

Having qualified in 1971 from the training course initiated by Alexander, Robin is the most experienced AT teacher in Switzerland. He offers individual sessions to anyone interested to learn how to get rid of their difficulties and improve their performance by applying the Technique in whatever they do at work, at home, and in all other circumstances. The Technique can help you reduce pain and stress, yet also simultaneously help you improve your posture, your breathing, and your performance in any activity.

The Technique is especially valued by musicians and singers as they can almost at once notice the improvement in the quality of the sound they are making. Robin has worked with internationally well-known musicians and singers, and is still working with several top musicians who play in the Opera House orchestra. He has also been working with the young talented musicians of the Opera House Akademie. But you do not have to be a musician or even play any instrument to benefit from lessons in the Alexander Technique as the instrument we are refining in its working is yourself.

Fortunately, in Switzerland, the sessions in the Alexander Technique are supported by the health insurances if you have complimentary health cover. And Robin has had several recommendations from medical people who have sent their patients to have lessons in the Technique.

Robin John normally teaches in English although he can manage in German as well. He is married to Beatrice Simmons-Heiz who is also a teacher of AT and an Animistic counsellor. Robin John is also a qualified teacher of Nordic Walking since 2007, and he has been also teaching T’ai Chi Ch’uan since 1972. He in addition teaches the Evolutionary Procedures of Professor Dart. He has written several books including “The Evolution of Movement” and “The Gold Dust in the 4 Books of Alexander”.

Alexander Technique: Ergonomic evaluation and seating for business

For many years Robin John ran a small company associated with his Alexander Technique teaching which retailed ergonomic seating and other equipment called Design For Good Use.  He has been invited by various small business concerns (including an office chair manufacturer) to advise them as to the most efficient and ergonomic way to improve the conditions for staff members.

In 2010 he and his wife Béatrice ran a program in Wallis, Switzerland for 300 bus drivers to improve the safeguarding of their health based upon the Alexander Technique. He has also been asked to give similar advice and to work with staff members at a 5-star hotel in Saas-Fee. Testimonials from companies are on his website in the section on AT and Business.

During his training with the Carrington’s Robin John was introduced by Walter Carrington to the Procedures devised by Professor Raymond Dart.

He has now become known worldwide for his expertise on the Dart Procedures and has given presentations of them at several International Alexander Teacher Congresses (recently in Limerick 2015 and Chicago 2018).  His book, The Evolution of Movement which describes his outlook on the procedures and how they are integrated with the Alexander Technique was published in 2018 and has been widely acclaimed. He has given workshops on these procedures in many countries. He now runs a weekly class on the Dart Procedures online every Friday morning at 11.00 CET

T’ai Chi Ch’uan:

Having initially begun taking intensive private lessons in 1969, Robin John found T’ai Chi to be of special interest, especially the aesthetic and meditational aspects of the art. After his first teacher left London in 1972, he continued to make visits to him abroad and began giving individual and group classes in London. Individual classes continue today in Zürich. There is a YouTube film of Robin John performing the T’ai Chi Short Form: put in Robin Simmons T’ai Chi and it comes up.

Nordic Walking: Robin John completed his Diploma as an instructor in 2005. His Nordic Walking instruction is uniquely based on the Alexander Technique.

Robin Simmons has extensive knowledge and experience of the Alexander Technique which has helped me tremendously. As a professional musician, I am now able to rehearse and perform for long hours without pain. The improvements have helped to open up my breathing and improve my tone quality. Besides the huge benefit from private lessons, Robin has provided me with several techniques which I can practice on my own and are very useful for me to maintain a healthy condition. I highly recommend Robin as an Alexander teacher.
